Plea on civil service cull

Business leaders have called on Gordon Brown to rethink plans for a massive cull of civil servants at the Department for Trade and Industry.

The Chancellor is demanding redundancies across Whitehall as part of his drive to cut spending by ?20billion.

But the Confederation of British Industry says any reduction in the Department's budget would undermine its role in promoting competitiveness.
