Perfect for that first date

Once upon a time a first date meant a trip to the cinema or the local Italian restaurant. Today, however, romance is more creative.

A study of the most popular spots in London to spark a relationship shows that assignations at the cinema, theatre, pub or restaurant are thoroughly out of fashion.

Instead a spin on the London Eye, a walk along the Thames or a stroll in Soho are considered the three best settings when it comes to finding love.

A survey of 1,000 Londoners, to discover the 10 best places for a first date, shows that the Eye is the undisputed venue of choice, with more than one in five respondents choosing it - perhaps because their date wouldn't have the option of walking out on them for at least half an hour.

For many first daters, an option that is free proved most seductive. A walk by the Thames, or a meeting at Eros followed by a tour of Soho were closely followed on the list by an outing to Portobello Road, Covent Garden or Primrose Hill - in fourth, fifth and six place.

"The first date venue is really important," said Lee Bramzell, director of dating experience firm Chemistry, which carried out the survey.

"It reveals a lot about the person you are and what kind of relationship you are looking for."

This might explain why some people suggest a romantic interlude in Harrods' famous foodhall - it screams affluence, and there are plenty of sensuous foods to explore before lingering over aphrodisiacs in the champagne and oyster bar.

North London fares well in the romance stakes. If Primrose Hill isn't your thing, a walk over Hampstead Heath, with perhaps a stop at Kenwood House, was the next most popular option, followed by a visit to London Zoo.

The exotic surroundings of Brick Lane were also considered to be a romantic venue for a first meeting.

"London is filled with ideal starting places, so take a chance and ask someone on a date," said Mr Bramzell.
