Pensioner is killed for £90

A pensioner has died after being mugged for ?90 while on her way to the shops.

Police today appealed for help in catching the man who killed 76-yearold Gwendoline Nitta.

She died at the Mayday Hospital in Croydon a month after a man pushed her to the ground causing severe head injuries. During the robbery in St Andrew's Road, Croydon, at 5.50pm on 4 December, Mrs Nitta's handbag, containing ?90 and a credit card, was stolen.

Detective Inspector Nick Downing of Croydon CID said: "I appeal to the local community to help us identify Mrs Nitta's attacker."

Mrs Nitta, who was divorced, worked as a social worker for Croydon-council for most of her life. Her attacker is described as a lightskinned black man, aged between 19 and 23, with short black hair and light-coloured clothing.

A man matching his description was seen near the ticket machines at East Croydon railway station after the attack.
