Passenger and driver act as midwives for baby born on bus

A woman gave birth on board a London bus with the help of a fellow passenger and the driver.

The passenger who has not been named, gave birth shortly before 7pm on Saturday.

Barmaid Sharon Eve, 47, and driver Keith Emmery helped deliver the baby boy.

Mrs Eve said: "I was petrified. The woman was very calm but she said "my waters have broken". She sat on the floor by the back step. She said she wanted to push and I told her to wait for the ambulance.

"She said she could already feel the baby's head so I just pulled down her jeans and the baby was there. It took about 15 minutes.

"The woman said she was a week overdue. I have never known a baby come out that quick."

Mrs Eve alerted Mr Emmery, who pulled over, evacuated the other 20 passengers and called for emergency assistance. He said: "It really took me by surprise, it all happened so quickly. It was all very calm and was quite exciting in a way. Mrs Eve deserves all the credit. She did an amazing job.

"I made the call at 6.35pm and the baby was born at around 6.50pm. We wrapped the baby in a cardigan, he was quite tiny.

"They're all calling me 'baby man' at work now. I'm waiting for my little granddaughter to be born this week too I think we must have started off a baby boom."

The mother and baby were taken to a local hospital in Dagenham and have since been released.
