Paras deny murder as trial is set for the Gulf

Two of the paratroopers accused of murdering an Iraqi civilian today protested their innocence as it emerged they will face court martial in the Gulf.

It is understood the trial of the seven men is to take place in Iraq or Kuwait to ensure prosecution witnesses will attend. The most likely venue is Basra airport.

The prospect of the men being on public show in Iraq is being viewed with horror in military and political circles.

Senior officers are known to be worried that a successful prosecution could weaken the ability of soldiers to take difficult decisions in the field. They also fear reprisals.

Lawyer Gilbert Blades, who is to represent Private William Nerney, 23, said: "My client denies any involvement whatsoever." Bernard Potter, representing Corporal Scott Evans, 32, said: "He was surprised to be facing these allegations and denies them."

The charges relate to the death of Nadhem Abdullah, 17, who is alleged to have been kicked, beaten and clubbed to death by members of the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment. The Ministry of Defence refused to comment.
