Paramedics praise girl, five, who called 999 after mother collapsed

A five-year-old girl who called 999 to save her mother's life has been honoured by the London Ambulance Service.

Amy Gerrard was able to talk calmly to an operator after her mother Katarina collapsed with a seizure at their home in Eltham. She also gave paramedics the phone number of a family friend.

Amy was presented with a certificate for her quick thinking, and with her mother was taken on a tour of LAS's Waterloo control room.

Emergency Medical Dispatcher Mark Libby, who took the call at 4.46pm on September 15, said: "Amy's definitely the youngest caller I've had but she was very calm. Her actions undoubtedly saved her mum's life."

Mr Libby talked Amy through safety procedures until an ambulance crew and single responder unit arrived.

Amy, who goes to St Vincent's Catholic Primary School in Mottingham, said: "Mark was really nice on the phone when I spoke to him and made it easy for me. I am really happy that I helped to save my mum." Her mother said: "I'm very, very proud of her."
