Ovary swap 'limited to few'

HUNDREDS of thousands of sterile women will not benefit from the latest fertility breakthrough, a health expert warned.

It comes after it was announced that the first woman to undergo a full ovary transplant is due to give birth this week. The 38-year-old London woman received an ovary transplanted from her twin sister.

But fertility expert Paul Serhal, medical director of the assisted conception unit at University College London Hospital, said the technique would benefit only the small number of infertile women who have an identical twin as the problem of tissue rejection was almost non-existent.
