Going flat out

LG has produced two rather fetching widescreen Flatron models, in 28 and 32in - the RE28FZ10PX and RE32FZ10PX. The unique selling point is LG's Dynamic Focus, which aims to eliminate fuzziness and distortion from the corners of the screen. Other wizardry gives your square eyes great colour separation and image clarity. Built-in, 12-watt speakers deliver Nicam stereo sound, and there are lots of settings you can personalise.

Panasonic NVMX28

MiniDV cameras use tapes half the size of a cigarette packet, which means they are small. Because the Panasonic is digital, the images can be easily downloaded to your desktop. Horizontal models can be cradled in two hands for stability - the pictures are superb, and this model has a built-in flash, 100x digital zoom and 13 effects.

Sony's MicroMV DCR-IP7

Very dinky, thanks to Sony's MicroMV system which uses the smallest tapes around; picture and sound quality are very similar to a MiniDV camera. It has all the advantages of digital - as well as video and stills, it gives wireless web access and thanks to Bluetooth wireless trickery you can connect to the web without a PC. Movies or snaps can be emailed straight from the camera. The controls are a little fiddly, but it boasts a 120x digital zoom.

Canon V50Hi

If you are stuck, at the cheaper end, this Hi8 analogue model format is capable of nearly twice the resolution of ordinary VHS tape. The most innovative feature is its Flexi Zone, a small joystick which allows pinpoint focusing and exposure through the viewfinder or screen. It has a built-in video light for shooting in low light and a still-image option. Canon has installed internal image manipulation, which is claimed to improve quality. 22x zoom, eight camera effects.
