'I was in Spain and I was going to the swimming pool when I switched on the TV news. I called to Ingrid, my partner, and told her to come and see what was happening, and just as she came into the room the second plane went in. At first, I thought it was a re-run of what had already happened, then I realised there really was a second crash. At that point I thought, 'God, the world is ending''. My son was in New York. We couldn't get through until the evening. Then I discovered he had been due at a meeting in the South Tower at 8.30 that morning. Someone had phoned the previous evening and left a message on his answer machine to cancel the meeting. To this day he doesn't know who left that message. I said it was his guardian angel.'
