Oil prices nudge up inflation

Surging oil prices worldwide fuelled UK inflation last month as petrol and domestic heating costs increased, figures show today.

The Office for National Statistics said inflation rose from 1.1 per cent to 1.2 per cent in April.

The figure is well below the Government's two per cent target.

But economists said inflation would continue to edge higher in coming months, making further rises in interest rates more likely.
