The annual running of the bulls resulted in terror and pain today for eight runners who were gored at the Pamplona festival in Spain.

The 26-year-old New Yorker was hurled in the air and gored in his left thigh.

He was eventually taken to hospital o n a stretcher. Also hurt were an unidentified Briton, a 50-year-old American and Ludovico de Carlos Garcia, a 24-year-old man from Paris, who was reported to have been gored in the right knee. Five Spaniards were also seriously injured.

At least 10 others have been treated after being trampled today, according to the Red Cross.

Each day, six bulls and their accompanying steers career from the corral to the bull ring, where the bulls face a matador in the evenings.

The eight-day San Fermin festival has been held for centuries and draws thousands of tourists from around the world for late night drinking and early morning running with the bulls.

Fifteen people have been killed since 1910. The last fatal goring was of an American in 1995.
