Ofsted could check drug abuse and pregnancies

Schools could be made to keep records of teenage pregnancies, drug use and obesity among pupils, under government proposals.

The plan would see schools monitoring 18 factors related to students' well-being.

Details have been revealed in a leaked discussion document from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

It reiterates proposals set out last year in the Children's Plan that Ofsted inspectors should judge schools on pupils' well-being as well as existing factors such as exam results and exclusion rates.

The changes could be brought in as early as next year.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, told the Guardian: "If the Government adds more targets over which schools have very little control that would sound the death knell for teachers and school leaders.

"While it's important for schools to have good joined-up working, with a range of other services, they can't be held responsible for everything."-The Children's Plan last year said the new factors on which information should be collected could include "bullying, obesity, entrance to the youth justice system, and destinations on leaving".

A DCSF spokesman said the department would not comment on the leaked document but added: "This was announced in the Children's Plan in December and was warmly welcomed across the education and children's sectors.

"This is not about extra burdens on teachers or a rash of new targets for schools to meet - all of these issues are already measured and assessed.

"It is about making sure all children are healthy and safe - both in school and outside.

"It is not down to schools to solve issues in wider society alone. That's why we are developing this with teaching unions and a wide range of other organisations to get it right.

"We will be making further announcements later this year."
