'Offensive' cross is covered up

A crucifix at a crematorium has been covered up in case it offends mourners of other religions.

The decision by the manager of Croydon crematorium, Ken West, has angered Christians and other faiths.

Mr West said the crematorium's-chapel cross should be covered by curtains during non-Christian cremations in an attempt to qualify for a Charter Mark seal of excellence, which recognises standards of public service. Nitin Mehta, a spokesman for Croydon's Hindu community, said: "The Cross has been there for years and is not causing any offence."

A council spokesman said people can chose which religious symbols they want.
