Now I love my greens...

Supermarkets stand accused of creaming off farmers' profits and "squeezing the lifeblood from the countryside". Well, as the daughter of a rampant Islington humanrights activist, I've spent most of my adult life rejecting any attempts at an eco-friendly lifestyle.

I couldn't care less about the state of the hedgerows, or how often I turn the washing machine on with just the one T-shirt because I fancy wearing it. But, having been forced to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle as an assignment for Vogue magazine, I became a subscriber to Farmaround, a Yorkshire-based company which delivers, direct to my home in Barons Court, a weekly consignment of admittedly knobbly but delicious organic fruit and vegetables. Three months on, and I still await my fix with unsuppressed glee.

What I like most is the fact there is not much choice about what you get. The box just arrives on the doorstep and you have to deal with it. The choice at the supermarket is too overwhelming, anyway. I've never bothered to work out how Farmaround's prices compare, but even if it is more expensive than supermarket organic, it's worth it.

My regular order is for the "luxury fruit basket", a label that couldn't be less descriptive of what it actually is. I was expecting a hamper like the ones from Fortnum & Mason and this dirty brown sack that looked as though it should have coal in it arrived on the doorstep with a notice saying: Please Recycle.

But the fruit itself - you're guaranteed that your new season strawberries, for example, haven't been airlifted from Spain, but are British and local - is amazing. The melons are delicious. I've never tasted ones like them in this country. They look ghastly and some of them have caterpillars, but I suppose caterpillars are protein at least.

I also order a box of veg but there's a lot of it that I don't know what to do with. I tend to send all the strange stuff upstairs to the nanny, who does clever things. My children, aged two and six, don't necessarily eat more vegetables, but they certainly get more of them on their plates, and they get quite excited about things I can't name, such as a mutant green cauliflower. The only thing I don't like is the rocket: it takes about three hours to wash. I'm afraid it tends to sit in the fridge and become quite smelly.

But I have started eating things I would never have dreamed of touching in the past. We received a pumpkin the other week and Nick, my partner, did something really spectacular with it, a kind of curry, and I thought, bloody hell, we'll have to get another one of these.

Also, I definitely feel healthier, and my skin is glowing. I've lost four kilos in weight and I've realised that the best thing is to have a plate half filled with vegetables with a tiny portion of protein. It's easier doing that when a box of veggies arrives every Wednesday at 7.30am. In the past, I'd grab a Kit-Kat; now I reach for an incredibly sweet carrot.

What's more, my attitude has changed. A year ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about buying a bagged salad that wasn't organic. But the other day, I had to get my lunch from M&S and I bought a salad that wasn't organic and it didn't feel right. I can't say it tasted worse, but for me that's not really the point.

Now, I think it's really important to "eat clean", the fewer preservatives the better. Since turning 44, I'm beginning to find that people around me are starting to die of various things. I just want to do the best I can not to toxify myself. I never used to believe that you are what you eat, but now I really do.
