No risk, says hospital over its lost patient

A secure north London hospital which allowed a violent mental patient to walk free for almost 48 hours denies risking public safety.

Police launched a hunt for the 40-year-old, convicted in April of attempts to kill two Tube passengers, amid fears that he could be dangerous without his medication. He returned to the hospital yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman for Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust said: "Safety of patients and the public is paramount. Following a thorough risk assessment, all patients have an individually tailored treatment plan. Over a period this is likely to include leave from the ward."
