New smoking curbs in force

Tough new measures to further restrict cigarette advertising in shops and pubs come into force today.

Advertising space for tobacco products at kiosks and other outlets are now limited to an A5-sized area - which includes health warnings.

Trading Standards officers will police violations, which could lead to £5,000 fines or five months in prison. Health Secretary John Reid hailed the new regulations and said of smoking's "glamourous" image: "We know this is not the case - it is addictive and deadly."
