New drug-drive tests start today

Police will have powers from today to conduct compulsory roadside tests on drivers they suspect are under the influence of drugs.

The powers are in a code of practice detailing how officers must conduct-tests to judge if someone is unfit to drive.

Roadside impairment tests have been voluntary but now drivers must take part if police suspicions are aroused. Refusal to participate is an offence. Road Safety Minister David Jamieson said: "Drug-driving puts lives at danger and is as irresponsible as drink-driving.

"Drivers should never get behind the wheel when unfit to drive."
