Nato hits Gaddafi's Tripoli compound

NATO pounded the area near Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's compound today in an apparent attempt to weaken the Libyan leader's hold on Tripoli as rebel troops moved on the capital.

There was no word on casualties but large plumes of smoke were seen rising from near the presidential residency following the raids.

The rebels have seized control of the eastern third of Libya and pockets of the west.
