Named and shamed paedophile held

A convicted paedophile whose picture appeared in a Sunday newspaper is being questioned by police today on suspicion of failing to sign the sex offenders' register.

Tuan Quang Ho, 25, was arrested after an appeal in the News of the World on Sunday. He was taken to a south London police station.

Ho was convicted in May 1997 at Kingston Crown Court of two counts of indecent assault on a 14-year-old girl. He was released in December 1997 and re gistered at an address in south-east London but appeared to have left in May.

A spokeswoman for the newspaper said it was "delighted" its campaign had produced instant results. He added: "We are positive that more of the named paedophiles will be located in the next few days."

The paper was criticised after it emerged that another of the men pictured, Wilfred Thellmann, was under supervision. However, the paper said its information and the photograph had come from police. Scotland Yard said it would be "inappropriate" to discuss the claim.

The developments come as the parents of eight-year-old Sarah Payne, murdered by paedophile Roy Whiting, are due to meet Home Secretary David Blunkett to discuss the campaign for controlled public access to the sex offenders' register.

Sara and Michael Payne will be joined at today's meeting by News of the World editor Rebekah Wade. The paper has campaigned for "Sarah's Law".

The Government has ruled out endorsing this demand. A spokeswoman for the Home Office said it was proposing tougher sentencing and allowing "community representatives" to play a role in managing sex offenders.
