My London: Richard and Judy

Where do you live and why? R&J: In Hampstead because it has a village centre, shops and good schools.

If money were no object, where would you live? J: Where we are. We live on the Heath and the views are meadow-like.

What is your idea of a perfect Friday night? R: Sitting in front of the telly with an Indian takeaway and a bottle of wine. J: On a perfect night there would probably be no children. R: Oh yes, sod the children!

Are you a member of any club? R: We were given membership to Home House but we don't go there often. It's a bit poncy.

Do you have a local restaurant or pub? R: Probably the best restaurant in Hampstead - which isn't noted for great restaurants - is Villa Bianca, an Italian place in the centre of the village where you can sit outside on a warm evening.

What is the most beautiful London landmark? R: There's a Roman bath just off the Strand - you can see it through a window. Once upon a time there would have been a Roman merchant watching his family disporting themselves in the bath. J: It's really boring, but Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. They're so romantic in the evening.

And the ugliest? R: The whole of the South Bank is vile, like something out of post-War Leningrad.

What is your favourite view? R: At sunset through our front window with sunlight dappling through the trees. J: Any of the parks.

Where is the most intimidating place in London? J: Piccadilly scares me to death. R: The cashpoints in Oxford Street have signs saying, basically, 'You will be mugged if you use this cashpoint.'

What was the last book or CD you bought? R: First Light by Geoffrey Wellum, which has the most astonishing prose I've ever read about a fighter pilot in action. The last CD was an Eric Clapton compilation. J: My book is Daphne du Maurier's The Loving Spirit. I don't buy CDs.

What was the last play you saw in London and did you enjoy it? R: Judy is completely inoculated against the theatre as she studied drama at university. J: I've got a low boredom threshold but we did see Chicago on Claire Sweeney's last night.

What has been your most memorable night out? R: Probably the night Judy's dress fell down. J: Thank you for that. R: That's an honest answer - it was my most memorable night. There was also this private party at Madame Tussaud's with about 300 celebs and you didn't know who was real. I was next to Stephen Fry and he was so still, listening to somebody, I thought he was a waxwork.

When and where did you last get drunk? J: At Gaby Roslin's house with Paul O'Grady. We were all up, thanks to him, until 6am. R: This was before his heart attack - I think we nearly killed him.

Where do you exercise? R: I cycle around Hampstead. J: I don't. I exercise my brain by reading a lot.

Where in London would you want to be taken on a date? J: London's worn a bit thin, but I do love The Ivy.

Admit to one thing you've done in London that you've never told anyone before. J: Celebrity-spotting on Hampstead High Street. I still get excited when I see people. R: I had a row with a posh woman on the Heath when she tried to nick all the daffodils. It was outrageous.

Who last saw you naked? R: Her. J: Him.

What is the first piece of advice you'd give a London tourist? R: Don't go to Oxford Street. Come to Hampstead. J: I still feel like a tourist myself.

What was the last conversation you had with a cabbie? J: It was the other night, it was a brand-new cab and Richard said, 'Is this cab paid for?' R: Meaning, 'Is it on the account?' J: And the cabbie thought he was asking if he'd nicked it. He was quite offended.

If you were Mayor, what would you change? J: I'd reduce the roadworks.

What did you dream about last night? J: It was about our 16-year-old son, Jack, and his GCSEs. I dreamed I got a letter from his headmistress saying 'Re: Jack's proposed resignation from school.' Then she went through all the reasons he was resigning. And at the bottom she had put, 'Please don't expect any references from me.'

Have you ever been a victim of crime in London? R: No, touch wood.

Which shop could you not live without? R: Our local Waitrose.

What is the most expensive meal you've had in London and who were you with? R: It was at Villa Bianca with our boss at Granada, Andrea Wonfor. She's known as 'Wonfor the road' and, true to form, she ordered the two most expensive bottles of wine on the menu.

What is your favourite meal to cook at home? R: A Sunday roast.

What last made you cry? R: Yesterday, Judy was talking about the death of her father in an interview and spoke about his last words, and everybody cried - the journalist, Judy, me. J: I don't know why everyone was crying. R: Well, he did die yesterday morning. J: No he didn't, he died in 1984.

What would you put on the Trafalgar Square plinth? R: I would put alternating sculptures from the London art colleges - one week each.

What is your life philosophy? J: Try to worry as little as possible and don't feel you need to control things. R: Don't take yourself seriously.

Where would you have your ashes scattered? J: I'd want to be scattered in Cornwall, over the sea. R: Judy wants me to be buried in the garden.

If your house were on fire, which three things would you rescue? J: Richard, Jack and Chloe. I don't care enough about anything else. R: I'd think, 'Let it burn. Let the fire cleanse me.'
