My London: Moby

London can be tough place when you're the world's most famous 'little bald white guy' and half the clubs won't let you in.

Where do you live and why? I live in New York because I don't have a driving licence and it's one of the only cities where that isn't a liability.

Are you a member of any club? Frequent flier clubs, that's about it.

What was the last book you bought? I have a soft spot for airport trash so when I'm travelling a lot I'll go to WH Smith and buy garbage. I just bought a Dean Koontz book - utter trash, but very entertaining.

What's your favourite London restaurant? It's a sore spot because London is a city of ten million people, and there's not one outstanding vegetarian restaurant.

Where would you most like to spend a lost weekend? Probably Brixton. It reminds me of Manhattan because it's multi-ethnic and multi-cultural.

What keeps you awake at night? Caffeine, jet lag, pathological insecurities.

What's your earliest memory of London? When I first came here, I was very poor so I had to take the Tube from Heathrow into the centre of London, but I was such an Anglophile that every aspect of it was exciting to me.

What's the most beautiful London landmark? I get a bit of a thrill when I drive past Harrods at night and see it all lit up.

What's the ugliest London landmark? The Tower of London. It's an old, dumpy-looking medieval building. It doesn't really do it for me.

What was the last film you saw? Did you enjoy it? Human Nature, with Patricia Arquette and Tim Robbins. It seemed like it was trying a little bit too hard.

Where and when did you last get drunk? I got drunk last Saturday night at a house party in Brixton.

What's the most intimidating place in London? Any trendy nightclub that won't let me in! They don't care who I am. There are lots of little bald white guys out there.

What don't you leave home without? My laptop. I use it for e-mail, to write with, to draw pictures with, to play music with...

Admit to one thing you've done in London that you've never told anyone else about. I had a really tawdry one-night stand in King's Cross with someone I had met 20 minutes before. Sometimes tawdry can be wonderful, but this was the bad end of the tawdry scale.

Where did you last blow £2,000 and what was it on? Flying first class. I used always to fly coach class as I'm little and I fit in the seats pretty well. Now I fly so often my only indulgence is first-class tickets.

What do you miss most when you're away from home? In New York I have 14 skylights, so I miss being at home and it being filled with light.

What's the best bit of advice you'd give to a London tourist? Just walk around a lot. Look at all the nice touristy things but then give yourself a day and an evening to just walk around Notting Hill or Brixton. My favourite bits of London are the really nice little residential areas.

What are your best tips for overcoming depression? Spend ten minutes with a Jack Russell puppy.

Have you ever been refused entry to a club? More times than I can count! I've been refused entry to the Met Bar - a blessing in disguise - and Fabric. When I first went to Fabric, they gave us free champagne in the VIP room. A few months later I went there on my own and they wouldn't let me in, so I will never go back there again.

What's the most expensive meal you've ever had and who was it with? Well, I'm a vegan, so it's hard to find expensive meals. At Christmas a few years ago I took my whole family out to dinner at the Mercer Hotel in New York. That was fairly expensive.

If you were invisible for a day, where would you go in London and what would you do? I'd love to go into Buckingham Palace to see what kind of pornography the Royal Family is into.

What's your favourite view of London? There are some flights where you actually fly over the Thames. It's nice to see London from the air.

What shop in London could you not live without? Fresh & Wild. I go to the one in Westbourne Grove every day when I'm in London.

What's your most memorable night out in the UK? After Play came out, we went on tour for two years and after the last show I went to this club with all the people I'd been with during that time. We all got very drunk and took lots of drugs, and I ended up having a phenomenal one-night stand.

What last made you cry? Something on the BBC about families from North and South Korea being reunited. There were mothers who hadn't seen their sons in 30 or 40 years. You couldn't watch that and not cry.

Where would you have your ashes scattered? It doesn't really matter to me. Maybe somewhere interesting like Grand Central Station at rush hour.

If your house were on fire, what three things would you rescue? My laptop, a bag I have full of cassettes and mini-discs of all the music I've worked on for the past 15 years, and a Matt Groening picture of Homer Simpson which says, 'To Moby and his super friends, your pal Matt.'
