Motorists face roadwork hell

Thousands of motorists were trapped by roadworks in the City today as workmen pushed ahead with a scheme to get rid of the Shoreditch one-way system.

AA Roadwatch warned drivers to avoid the area after heavy traffic, wet weather and the roadworks combined to bring Commercial Street, Whitechapel High Street and parts of the A11, Bethnal Green Road, Eastern Street and Bishopsgate to a virtual standstill.

"It is absolutely horrendous," said an AA spokesman. The work will be completed in the autumn.
