Wall Street's tepid performance gave impetus to the sell-down as the Nikkei 225 declined 135.97 points to 10,559.59. Banks - ever the volatile sector - were particularly scarred. Mizuho Financial, the world's top lender by assets, dived 16,000 yen, or 5.6%, to 270,000; UFJ slumped 20,000 yen, or 5.5%, to 465,000; and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial traded at 558,000 yen, lower by 24,000 or 4.1%.
