Met officers armed with plastic bullets

Plastic bullets are to be issued to regular armed police patrols in London.

The plastic bullets - known as baton rounds - are intended to be a "less lethal" option to conventional firearms.

The Met will become the latest in only a handful of British forces to be equipped with a new version of the plastic bullet gun, which is said to be more accurate than the traditional version of the weapon used in Northern Ireland.

The new gun, which fires baton rounds measuring about 9cm by 3cm, has been in regular use in public order situations in Northern Ireland but has only been fired twice on the mainland.

However, the Yard said firearms will still be deployed against suspects who are, or who are suspected, of carrying a gun.

The decision to issue plastic bullets as an alternative to firearms comes after two fatal shootings by armed police in London in the last three years. On Friday, an inquest jury returned an open verdict on the killing of grandfather Harry Stanley, 46, who was shot by armed officers in Hackney in 1999 after they mistook a table leg he was carrying for a sawnoff shotgun.

Last year, 29-year-old parking attendant Derek Bennett was shot dead in Brixton by firearms officers after brandishing a cigarette lighter in the shape of a gun.

The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) is to be asked to approve the deployment of the new weapon at a meeting this week. A report to go before the MPA states: "The baton gun is primarily for use in situations of serious violence, such as those involving knives or other bladed instruments."

The baton-round gun, which can only fire one round at a time, will only be deployed when officers armed with conventional firearms are in support.
