Mr Medvedev said in his state-of-the nation address that Russia "needs democracy, not chaos" and that the government would strongly resist foreign pressure. But he did concede that the political system in Russia needed "comprehensive reform". His statement follows protests against alleged fraud in the recent vote, in which the main Kremlin party, United Russia, lost a quarter of seats and barely retained its majority.
