McDonalds cuts down to size

McDonalds is to stop "supersizing" its servings of French fries and fizzy drinks.

The giant-sized portions will be phased out in the fast-food chain's 13,000 American restaurants by the end of the year. It has not said if it will drop the super-size in Britain.

The move follows growing complaints that the company is promoting an unhealthy diet - nearly 40 per cent of Americans are now overweight.

Instead, McDonald's plans to focus on healthier eating, offering customers more salads, yoghurt and even a sliced apple for children.

It will still occasionally offer super-size drinks for "special promotions".
