Man shot by police on M6

A man was shot by police early today after a high-speed car chase on the M6 near Wigan.

The motorway was shut during the morning rush hour, causing eight-mile tailbacks. Police said the man was in hospital and his condition was "not life-threatening".

"A full investigation is taking place and the motorway will stay closed for the forseeable future," said a police spokesman.
