For the rest of us mere mortals, the capital is not always such a pleasant place to be. Like many Londoners, we lived nowhere near our parents - mine are in Scotland, John's are in the West Country - and so we wouldn't be able to get them to help out with childcare. There was no way we would be able to afford a nanny. I knew from the few friends of mine who'd had children in London that getting junior into a decent state school, or even a suitable nursery, involved endless interviews and even, in one case, a change of religion.
