London surgeons create first cyber heart

London doctors today unveiled the world's first "cyber" heart, which they believe will revolutionise cardiac care.

The 3D computer model was developed by surgeons at University College Hospital and is set to bring training into the 21st century.

Experts say the technology is the biggest step forward since Leonardo da Vinci transformed understanding of the heart 500 years ago. It is expected to improve the accuracy of cardiac operations and speed up surgery times.

Doctors can "slice" through the model displayed on a computer screen to show the internal structures of the heart.

Trainee surgeons currently train using text books, video clips and heart scanning - which is labour intensive and can carry risks for patients.

Students will now be able to gain an understanding of the organ by looking at a computer screen. This is crucial for ultrasound - used to examine the shape of the heart and diagnose disease - which can only be carried out by surgeons with a detailed knowledge of how the heart functions. The new tool means it will no longer take years to acquire this knowledge.

The virtual heart - which has been praised by eminent cardiac surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub - has taken two years to develop with a team at a digital animation company better known for TV commercials and music videos. Glassworks, based near Oxford Street, has produced special effects such as a dancing mouse for Aero chocolate bars and a goblin character for soft drink Sprite.

The heart is the idea of Sue Wright from the Heart Hospital, which is part of UCH. The consultant cardiac anaesthetist said: "We're hoping that the NHS will use this animated heart to revolutionise training. There's already been a hugely positive reception in the US and over here."
