Listed buildings are allowed to crumble away

The scale of neglect of London's historic buildings, from castles to cinemas, is revealed in a report today.

English Heritage names and shames the boroughs presiding over the biggest numbers of listed buildings and monuments which are at risk. It shows that:

Buildings on the list include Strawberry Hill and Severndroog Castle, both of which featured in the second series of BBC2's Restoration. Strawberry Hill, in Twickenham, was built in the 17th century and remodelled by Sir Horace Walpole.

Severndroog, in Greenwich, was erected in 1784 as a folly. It is now rundown and vandalised.

In total, 664 listed buildings, seven ancient monuments and 16 cemeteries and churchyard are at risk in London. The report, Heritage Counts, warns public support for historic buildings cannot be taken for granted, and reduced funding for English Heritage is a serious concern.

There is some good news. Buildings formerly at risk that have been restored include the Art Deco Isokon flats in Camden, and 52 Newington Green, England's oldest terrace houses, built in
