Koo wins battle to stop phone mast

The former girlfriend of Prince Andrew has won a campaign to stop a mobile phone company setting up a mast near schools.

Koo Stark protested against a proposal to erect the mast in South Kensington, an area in which about 4,000 children attend school.

After campaigning by Miss Stark and other residents, mobile phone giant T-Mobile has withdrawn its application to Kensington and Chelsea Council to site the mast at Jury's Hotel in Queen's Gate.

Miss Stark, 46, said: "I encourage anyone to go ahead with campaigns like this. There is enough evidence which says that these masts do cause cancer. I am absolutelythrilled by the news." The American actress and photographer has suffered from breast cancer and has founded the charity Keep Abreast, which works to prevent cancer. Her six-year-old daughter Tatiana is a pupil at one of the four schools in the area.

As well as petitions, campaigners set up meetings to discuss the health dangers of phone masts.
