Joe Cole the cabbie

He is the footballer of the moment who is hoping to help England on the road to World Cup glory. But Joe Cole's other ambition-is a world away from soccer - he wants to open a minicab firm in north London.

The Chelsea midfielder has spent almost £700,000 on a building in Camden Town and is asking Camden council for permission to turn it into new offices for the family business Meter Cars.

The firm - currently based in Kentish Town Road - is popular with businesses and residents in the area. Clients include Cherie Blair, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Sadie Frost.

Cole,bought the building in Arlington Road in January for £698,000. He is applying to change its use from a food outlet to a cab office. Signing the application Joseph Jason Cole, he gives the address of his large Romford home, where his adoptive parents are also listed as residents.

The footballer, 23, is in the form of his life, winning praise for performances for Premiership leaders Chelsea following his £6.2million move from West Ham and scoring for England in Saturday's European Championship qualifier against Northern Ireland.

Cole's design and legal team must show the offices will not cause traffic congestion or disruption to residents.

In a written statement to planners, his representatives say the premises would not be open to the public without appointment and "Drivers will NOT park, or sit in their vehicles outside the office whilst on a shift. All communication will be by radio."

The directors of Meter Cars are listed as Cole's adoptive father George and uncle Brian. In April last year Brian Cole was arrested after detectives raided Meter Cars while probing the black-market trade in stolen disabled parking permits. No charges were brought.
