Jack Straw stops plans for Dagenham prison

Jack Straw has thrown out plans for a 1,500-inmate prison on the former Ford plant in Dagenham.

The Justice Secretary said today he had pulled the plug on the category B jail.

A campaign led by the council and Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas called for the site to be regenerated with new housing and community facilities.
