ITV Digital's pre-pay scheme would differ from pay-per-view, which is offered to subscribers for individual sporting events. With pre-pay, viewers would buy set amounts of airtime for a range of channels. Crucially, they would not have to pay a subscription. A spokesman for Carlton said: 'When the costs of set-top boxes are reduced, we can be much more flexible. We ought to be able to offer a pick 'n' mix of channels, and in the same way that Vodafone, say, offers a £25 phone card, we will sell pre-pay cards that allow customers to view a couple of hours of UK Gold, for instance.'
