Investigation into appeal of fanatics

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens has ordered an investigation into why young British Muslims are increasingly tempted by fanatical groups bent on terrorism.

A task force will work with the Muslim community to root out the causes of the dissatisfaction and hatred that has already turned two Britons into suicide bombers. Last April Omar Sharif, from Derby, and Asif Hanif, of Hounslow, targeted a bar in Tel Aviv, killing three and injuring 65.

The Met commissioner said: "We've got to understand what motivates young Muslims and why some become fanatical enough to contemplate getting involved in terrorism, even suicide bombings."
