Inventor unveils plan for 'detachable cabins' to improve pilots' safety on planes

A Russian aviation inventor unveiled plans for a "detachable cabin" he claims could save lives in a plane crash.

The inventor, Vladimir Tatarenko, has unveiled the early stages of his concept in a video that sees the capsule detach from the cockpit of the plane.

The procedure would be deployed during an emergency to help the main cabin land on ground or water aided by parachutes and floats.

The inventor has been working on his plans for three years and believes the project could save lives.

He told LiveLeak: “Surviving a plane crash is possible. While aircraft engineers all over the world are trying to make planes safer, they can do nothing about the human factor.”

His video split opinion after being uploaded to YouTube.

Some commenters pointed out it would be an expensive measure to put into practice.

“Of the millions of flights a year, less than 500 people die worldwide a year. Seems not terribly cost effective,” wrote one viewer.

But others were pleased at the prospect of flying becoming safer: "Genius plan! Especially for the people who are Scared to fly on planes."
