The next 18 days were a nightmare of "wash-out" operations, general anaesthetics, sleepless nights, blood samples and the nausea and diarrhoea caused by the huge doses of intravenous antibiotics. I felt grateful to the staff at Kingston for treating my infection, particularly the junior doctors, who were superb and sympathetic, but the longer I stayed, the more I worried about hospital hygiene and safety. I became obsessed with standards of cleanliness - I only wish everyone else had been, too.
