Hit-and-run girl rangmother to say 'I'm dying'

The mother of an 18-year-old girl involved in a hit-and-run accident today told how her daughter rang her to say she had been run over and thought she was dying.

Kate Sheedy is fighting for her life after being run over twice. She has told detectives that after she was knocked to the ground, the motorist drove back over her.

The sixth-form student from Isleworth, who was about to sit her A-levels, was hit by a car as she walked home after a night out. As the teenager lay on the ground she was able to call her mother using her mobile phone to ask her to ring for an ambulance.

Eileen Sheedy said: "No mother wants or expects to be phoned by their own child saying that she has been run over and that she thinks she is dying. When I found Kate on the pavement her first concern was for her pink shoes. These she bought for her 18th birthday."

After being run over Kate managed to pick herself up and stagger a short distance in an attempt to get home.

Kate, who was head girl at Gumley Convent School in Isleworth, had earlier given a speech at her school-leaving service and was returning from a night out celebrating-with friends when she was hit by the car on Saturday. One theory is that she was deliberately targeted. Detective Sergeant Phillip Ryan said: "This was a callous act. We are exploring all avenues but cannot understand why she should have been targeted. She does not appear to have any enemies."

Kate's condition remains critical and she is in intensive care with life-threatening internal injuries and broken bones.
