Hewitt plan for sexism commission

Patricia Hewitt will today promise action to tackle the "scandal" of sexism in the workplace.

Ms Hewitt will use her conference speech to promise action to ensure women get an equal deal from the moment they leave school until retirement.

The Trade and Industry Secretary will outline a commission to investigate discrimination against women - set up following a series of high-profile cases in the City involving sexism and inequality.

Chaired by former union boss Baroness Prosser, it will look at ways to ensure women get the same pay and promotion opportunities as men. It will also examine careers advice offered to women, their educational choices and the conditions of part-time workers.
