About 170,000 patients are admitted to casualty each year after injuring or trying to poison themselves, according to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). They should all be given a psycho-social assessment to improve treatment, guidelines compiled by NICE said. It was found they sometimes received poorer care than other patients.
