Half London drivers admit speeding

Motorists in London have confessed to being the nation's worst speeders in a new survey.

Fifty-four per cent of the capital's drivers say they travel too fast on main roads, compared to just 38 per cent per cent in the rest of the UK - even though most motorists now admit that speed is the leading cause of crashes.

The report by the RAC also shows that 19 per cent of London and South-East drivers have been involved in an accident in the past three years, with 14 per cent having points on their licence, compared to 18 per cent and 11 per cent nationally.

Around two-thirds of drivers in the South-East now back the use of cameras to curb speeding but more than half say they should be painted brightly to help motorists pinpoint them.

More than 30 per cent of motorists in London say they have been flashed by speed cameras but only one quarter of those had been convicted.

Asked how London's chronic congestion should be tackled, most motorists cited improving public transport. In a response that will encourage Ken Livingstone, 26 per cent of those surveyed said they would use public transport to get to work if congestion charges were introduced, although only two per cent favoured them.
