Gun gang in jewel raid

Raiders escaped with a £250,000 diamond necklace after threatening staff at a London jeweller's with a machine gun.

The three men, smartly dressed in overcoats and trilbys, struck at Hirsh jewellers in Burlington Arcade, W1.

One posed as a customer interested in buying the necklace. As it was being shown to him, a second man appeared in the doorway and the "customer" tried to grab the 63-diamond piece.

The store manager wrestled the bogus customer to the floor, but backed off when the second man opened his coat to reveal the gun hanging round his neck. The gunman tried to snatch another necklace from a 23-year-old assistant, punching her in the chest when she resisted.

The thieves fled with a third man who had been waiting outside. They ran down the arcade and into Piccadilly, chased by an off-duty policeman out shopping, who lost them when the three separated. Two are believed to have fled down New Bond Street into Albemarle Street.

The necklace, a unique piece set in white gold and dating from about 1900, was recently lent to a famous client for a charity dinner with the Queen at Claridges. Shop owner Anthony Hirsh said: "When the staff saw the gun they were clearly scared and backed off. They are unhurt but traumatised."

Detectives believe the gang, who spoke with foreign accents, are "specialist" thieves, possibly from an eastern European crime gang.

The Flying Squad is checking whether the weapon was a Heckler & Koch carbine, a weapon normally issued to police and the military.
