Go to Tesco and bag a free taxi

Tesco today launched a free cab service for London customers in the increasingly tough supermarket wars.

It will take them from a store to any destination in Zones One and Two.

All shoppers need is a Tesco receipt from the same day. There is no minimum spend.

If a cab doesn't happen to be passing, one can be ordered by phone. Tesco and Radio Taxis are launching the scheme for a four-week trial.

The supermarket insists it is not a gimmick and that if it proves a success it will be extended nationwide.

Spokesman David Page said: "It is a first from a UK retailer and is another way of making life easier for our London customers."

At Tesco in Cromwell Road, shopper Sally Randolph, from Kensington, said: "It's a marvellous idea for anyone who has popped into the store on their way home from work and bought more than they planned."
