'Go to Scotland' for a car service

London car owners are paying the highest servicing bills in the country, a survey revealed today.

Drivers are being charged " extortionate" labour rates of up to £153 an hour just to maintain their cars.

BMW Chelsea's rate - of £130 plus VAT - was the highest found in the survey, which compared prices at franchised dealers linked to big car firms with those at smaller independent outlets.

The survey found it would be cheaper for London drivers to drive to Scotland for a service and stay overnight in a hotel. Twelve franchised South-East firms including Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar and Land Rover all charged more than £100 an hour. The most expensive franchised Scottish dealers charged £70.50 but the average was £43.12 an hour.

The survey was for guarantee firm Warranty Direct, which insures 33,000 cars against breakdown. Managing director Duncan McClure- Fisher said: " Some motorists are having to stomach truly extortionate charges."

He said at franchised dealers with an average national labour rate of £74.94, mechanics earned about £20,000 a year - equivalent to only £9.60 an hour. Large regional variations could not be justified. "It would be cheaper to go to Scotland and stay the night if it is a big job than have the repair done in London."

No one was available to comment at BMW Chelsea in Parsons Green but UK head office spokesman Mark Harrison said: "Our cars come with a servicing package for up to five years so the cost of ownership is very low in the first years."

A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said modern cars required fewer garage visits because they were more reliable and added: "A lack of skilled technicians has forced up labour costs."
