Girl, 12, quizzed after pupil's death

A girl of 12 has been arrested over the death of an 11-year-old who was allegedly attacked on her way home from school.

Alisa Haywood died of acute swelling of the brain a week ago and detectives suspect she may have been attacked by a group of girls.

Police said the 12-year-old was arrested less than 24 hours after Alisa's death on suspicion of assault and questioned. She has since been released on police bail but officers may have to wait two weeks before forensic tests reveal exactly how Alisa died.

Alisa, of High Wycombe, told her mother she had been attacked on her way home from school last Wednesday.

Almost 48 hours later she collapsed and was taken to hospital. She died later the same day.

The incident is believed to have taken place on the school bus or as Alisa walked through a shopping centre in the town.

Detectives confirmed they were investigating whether the attack led to her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Karen Trego said: "Until forensic results have been received we do not know if the alleged assault had any bearing on Alisa's death."

A police spokesman added: "Obviously, we will look into any possibility of bullying. There has been no suggestion of this by her family so far. But we have two separate allegations that she was assaulted."

Alisa's mother Stephanie described her daughter as a "wonderful and happy girl". She said: "Alisa was a lively, thoughtful girl with a bubbly personality. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her." It is understood that the 12-year-old also attended Wye Valley School in Bourne End where Alisa was in year seven.

Headteacher Linda Melton said: "Alisa was a quiet, shy little girl who always looked immaculate. She worked to the best of her ability and was making steady progress in her lessons. She will be sadly missed by everyone at the school."

The school added in a statement that it was giving police "all assistance" with the investigation and offering staff and students support.
