Gerhard Richter review at Tate Modern

A retrospective of five decades of German visual artist Gerhard Richter's work was unveiled today at Tate Modern.

The exhibition, titled Panorama, celebrates the artist's 80th birthday and while it focuses on painting there are also works featuring glass constructions, mirrors, drawings and photographs.

Tate Modern director Chris Dercon said: "There hasn't been a full retrospective for many, many years."

The artist caused controversy in 2007 when his stained glass window at Cologne Cathedral featured no obvious religious themes.

Richter gained prominence early in his career after becoming one of the first German artists to reflect on the Nazi regime. In the 1970s he courted controversy with a sequence of black and white paintings based on images of the Baader-Meinhof gang. More recently he has also painted images inspired by the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001.
