Fuel costs put £30 on the price of flying

Airline passengers are going to see a rise in prices on everything from luggage to onboard meals.

Industry executives say the days of cheap travel are over as the cost of aviation fuel has doubled in the past 12 months - and passengers will pay for it.

At the annual summit of the aviation industry in Istanbul yesterday, airline bosses united in predicting that fares will rise. One said that the price of a ticket will go up by £30.

Transport Association, said yesterday: "When you add $50bn to the bill, somebody has to take care of the cost."

John McCulloch, the managing partner of the Oneworld alliance of airlines, including British Airways, Qantas, Iberia and Cathay Pacific, said passengers on European flights will be charged £20 for luggage and £10 for food on top of the ticket price. He said American airlines were already adopting the policy.

Meanwhile, budget airline Ryanair - which already charges for luggage and airport check-in - today confirmed that soaring costs meant it could ground up to 10 per cent of its fleet this winter.
