Fayed goes to Lords in fight over Met arrest

Harrods boss Mohamed Fayed is going to the House of Lords in a final attempt to sue the police for wrongful arrest.

During a £7 million legal battle, Mr Fayed has suffered a series of defeats in his attempt to claim £1,000 damages from the Met over his arrest in 1998.

The saga started in 1995 with complaints that Harrods staff had broken into a safe deposit box belonging to Mr Fayed's business rival Tiny Rowland. In 1998, Mr Fayed voluntarily attended a central London police station where he was arrested and questioned over the allegations. He concedes that the police had a duty to question him but maintains that it was not necessary to arrest him.
