Exposed: More botched Tube repairs

London commuters are today presented with more DIY 'bodges' on the Underground.

After yesterday's disturbing image of part of the Victoria line track being held together with pieces of wood and bent nails, the Evening Standard has discovered fresh examples of shoddy workmanship.

In one case, a wooden sleeper supporting both tracks of the northbound Bakerloo line at Waterloo Station is held in place by a precarious arrangement of two other pieces of wood.

A block of hardwood has been placed below the track to support the rails but, because it is not large enough, a smaller bit has been wedged into the gap between them.

The same sleeper is held in place on the far side by further pieces of wood. The sleeper is supposed to ensure the stability of the rail. Several large power tools, sledgehammers and bolts have also been left lying uncovered in the "suicide-pit" between the rails.

Roger Evans, Conservative transport spokesman on the London Assembly, said of the new pictures: "It seems dangerous, it looks shoddy and it is worrying for passengers. The state of the Tube needs proper investigation, people need reassuring. That is why I am calling for a full safety review of the Tube."

Cynthia Hay of Capital Transport, the public transport safety body, said: "Given the number of things that are going wrong, passengers will want a public inquiry into how the Underground is being maintained."
