Drink-drive Barnes is banned for a year

Newsreader Carol Barnes has lost her licence for a year after being caught drink-driving.

The ITN broadcaster, who pleaded guilty, was fined ?150 by Eastbourne magistrates and warned she faces losing her post as a magistrate in Brighton.

The ban comes seven months after her daughter Clare, 24, died in a skydiving accident in Australia.

Barnes, 61, has told how she questions whether her failed relationship with Clare's father, Foreign Office minister Denis Mac-Shane, prompted her daughter to go to Australia. At the time of Clare's death, she said: "I wish I had spent more time with her."

Barnes was voted Newscaster of the Year in 1984 and now presents ITN's 24-hour digital news channel as well as financial programme Simply Money.
